Paragraph

On an average children watch up to four hours of television every day.  There are many negative aspects to this. One main problem with children watching too much television is there not getting enough social time with family or friends (Manali oak). Other big issues in today’s society are inappropriate conflicts on television such as, violence, drug abuse, and sexual content. Although these programs are only intended for adult vision, many children are watching as well. When a child views violent acts, some will act out in, or out of the classroom by screaming, hitting, biting, and even spiting. Violence also includes horror movies, which may frighten younger children, and bring on horrific nightmares. When you’re that young you may not understand what’s fiction and nonfiction. Studies have shown viewing sexual content early on in age leads to having sex prematurely or participating in sexual acts earlier than those who don’t watch this (Nemours). Today drug abuse is widely spread throughout television, whether it be, alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, ext.  In another study it was shown that kids that watch more than five hours of TV a day are more likely to pick up smoking. If children view this material on TV, they have an understanding of it be acceptable. It’s viewed as being cool

Draft memoir

They day my grandmother passed away, was the day a piece of me was gone with her. When she got sick with cancer she’d tell my family she was going to come back as a butterfly. One night not to long after her death I had a dream; I was standing in a field, the sun was colorful and warm. I could smell sunflowers. I look up and I see this beautiful butterfly swooping down towards me. It was a brilliant aqua with dark blue veins running through its wings. Its lands on my shoulder. It was a feeling of safety, comfort, and patience. I didn’t want it to leave me. Before I could even wake up I had the understanding of it being my grandmother.

Every brush I made on the paper, I felt that much closer to a permanent decision. Am I ready for this? I had given it a lot of thought throughout the years. As I finished sketching the flowers I moved onto the anchor. My grandfather was a marine; he deeply cared about his profession, knowing how proud his family was of him. It was something he enjoyed. Flying towards the anchor I drew a butterfly about to perch on the edge and colored it in aqua- grandma’s favorite color. I wrapped two sunflowers around it. As I finished this I knew it was going to be apart of me for the rest of my life. All three of these objects represented some of the most important people to me, my grandfather, grandmother, and mother. The reason why I chose sunflowers for my mother is because it’s her favorite flower. When I had that dream a few years back, I now understand it smelled of sunflowers because of my mother.

It was a month after my eighteenth birthday, I walked into the tattoo parlor, the music was sort of loud, but the buzzing of the gun was overpowering and lingered throughout the shop. A few of my friends began to look through the artist’s portfolio, trying to make a life decision in only a few minutes. I gazed through it quickly. The only thing that caught my attention was a drawing of a monkey racing on a little pink toy car. I still can’t get myself to understand why anyone would tattoo something on themselves that have absolutely no meaning.

“Your next girl” my friend called out from a hidden room down the hall. I walked in steadily and saw my friend Justin drawing out the image I had created, using his own techniques .Justin has been tattooing for four years now and he has become a great artist.  He’s mostly known for script, and has done another tattoo I had gotten not to long before. It’s psalm 23:4. I was brought up catholic, so getting tattoos aren’t widely accepted, so the irony of a prayer being marked on your body could be looked at in a few ways. For myself I believe, sometimes life can lead you in the wrong direction, and beliefs change.  I got this to keep me close to my faith. I have no regrets getting that tattoo. When I see those words, I am reminded to keep faith even when you feel like there not much hope.

He places the stencil on my upper shoulder, asking me if the placement’s good. After getting the right adjustments, I feel the cool mist spray on my skin and he applies pressure to the stencil. A strong smell of green soap hangs in the air. I straddle the chair with my face pointed towards the ground.  As soon as I hear the machine buzz, I felt a burning feeling tear across my shoulder blade. It feels as if you’re dipping a scrape into the salty ocean water.  Two hours of pain, I can’t wait for the buzzing too subside. The only relief was the cool spray used to wipe of the running of the ink. I squeezed my mother’s hand. She stood by my side the whole time, knowing how much this means to me. My father waits in the other room unhappy. He let me know before I went in there that this was going to be permanent; like I hadn’t already known.  I watch Justin dip the needle into the yellow ink, completing the last stroke. “Were all done” he calls out.

I cried seeing my tattoo for the first time. There’s a sense of comfort. It’s as if I’m back in my dream.. I couldn’t picture myself without it today. This tattoo has helped me deal with the loss of my loved ones. My mother is happy that she is a part of it also. I know how hard it was for her  to lose her parents, so I wanted her to know they’ll always be together. It’s beautiful that art has helped me deal with hard situations, especially things that you cannot change. I have been practicing to be a tattoo artist myself. I hope to become a better artist and one day give someone something permanent that they can treasure forever.

Advertisment

For my rhetorical analysis I chose an advertisement for Crayola crayons. Crayola was created by two cousins; Edward Binny and Harold Smith in 1903. The name comes from two French words; Crai (chalk) and oleaginous (oily). In 1855 Edwards’s father gave him the business and while working, he experimented with a few things and created the first dustless chalk. His invention was awarded a gold medal, in 1902.

Before Crayola people had to use paint which Binny and Smith created, with red oxide pigments. Although Crayola wasn't the first crayon, they where affordable and easy to use especially for children. It started off with 8 colors in a box for a nickel, today we have over 120 color varieties. In the advertisement it shows the technology for its time. The ads more dedicated towards schools and teachers, which lifted Crayola into the success it has today. It states that they would give samples to teachers interested in color work. That proves there confidence in there product, I'm sure that caught many eyes.  Between 1964- 1974 Binny and Smith Company go world wide, and stationed themselves in England, Canada, and Mexico.  Less than 10 years latter Crayola pushes 100 million dollars in sales.  Mass production continues to increase, and by 1996 they hit there 100 billionth crayon.

Crayola is considered by many to be the best crayon. I would have to agree with this. It’s very smooth while brushing it against paper, and leaves a lasting brightness. I’ve noticed other brands not having the same color and texture. But that’s just my opinion. Crayola has much more to offer besides just crayons today. Some of there best products are, markers, paints, coloring pencils, oil pastels, clay, and many others. While it may seem children are the biggest users of Crayola, there are others who use there products to create professional art work.

feeling towards memoir

I'm feeling pretty confident about my memoir, the only problem I seem to be having is remembering certain times. My topic is the arts so for my personal experiences I'm going to be writhing about my tattoos and my tattooing experiences. There's allot of detail that's behind my ink that I would love to share. My memoir might also fall into the family category but it all relates back to my art.

Thinking made visible

My hometown was a wonderful (or choose your own adjective) place to grow up.
Laci had a rather eccentric style.
Mr. Brown is the worst teacher I’ve ever had.
The room seemed very institutional.

My hometown was overlooking the ocean; waves crashing, birds chirping, ocean breeze blowing. what a beautiful place.

laci had on, red high heels and a bright purple silk dress. The hat on her head stood out the most, it consisted of sharp colored feathers.

My teacher would constantly fall asleep in the middle of class, the only thing I learned from his class was how to fold paper origami.

Walking into her office was like walking into a jail cell. The room was very tiny, I felt as if the walls where closing in on me and it didn't help that there where bars on the windows. There was nothing in there besisdes two chairs and a wooden desk, I had no other option than to sit down.

Theme

Out of these topics, I'm mostly interested in The Arts, and Health & Medicine. One of my biggest passions is the art of tattooing, so that would have to be my first choice. There are many different views and opinions about tattoo's, whether it be religion, or personal preference.  For years people have been marking there bodies for self expression. I would love to learn more about the postive and negative outlooks on tattoo's. - . I chose Health & medicine for my second choice because I plan on working in the medical field. I love helping others and making a difference. Within the medical field there's allot of controversy and debate such as, health care, new medicines, procedures, and religious beliefs . I would love to know more about my future career.

Option 3- Criminal justice
